RAG is a pattern: retrieve relevant passages from a knowledge source, then generate an answer that is supposed to stay faithful to those passages. It is how an assistant can talk about your policies without you training a new foundation model.
Language models do not magically know your latest price list. If the answer must come from your files, you must retrieve those files.
Bad chunking, stale indexes, missing permissions, and answers that ignore the retrieved text. Evaluation on your questions is not optional.
